Six Artists - Wide Range of Media

Please visit our location during Lamorinda Arts Alliance's fall 2009 Open Studios. Six artists will be at 716 St. Marys Road in Lafayette across from the Little League ballfield. Open 10-5 on October 17th and 18th. We are George - a watercolor painter; Bob - an acrylic painter; Don - an oil painter; Charity - custom jeweler using several media; Barbara - a jewelery maker with a different look and media that Charity; and Diane - photographer and gourd painter. Diane also runs an organic produce farm on the property so you can buy tomatoes, beets, a pumpkin and a fabulous new piece of original art in one stop! Diane also makes note cards in several styles and due to possible move soon has a large selection of photos and cards priced to not have to move with her!

As of Sept. 3, anyone who goes to California Home + Design Magazine's front page will see a writeup on LAA Open Studios. (This will change as they update their site, but for the moment, we have the luxury of some prominent exposure.)

Margaret Lucas-Hill - silk painting

Margaret Lucas-Hill was educated in graphic design at the London College of Printing, London, England. She worked in advertising and, after her children were born, taught art in secondary school. She moved to northern California in 1993 where she has continued to pursue her career as an artist.
Although Maggie has long painted in oils, in her classrooms she taught silk screen printing to her young students. Continuing with this medium in her own work she found herself embellishing the prints. She abandoned the silk screen to paint directly on the silk fabric using a combination of the batik method and freehand painting.

She exhibits at the Lafayette Gallery in Lafayette and at Allison McCrady Gallery in Orinda, CA

Kris Vagner here: My background is in photography but lately I've been excited about making hand-built ceramic cups and plates formed on molds that I take from everyday objects with interesting textures, like bubble wrap, waffle irons, and throwaway plastic food containers. Here are a couple samples. Top: a sushi container, a plaster mold, and a yet-to-be-glazed plate made from the mold. Bottom: waffle cups, made from slabs of clay rolled into a rubber mold of a waffle iron. (The 3 on the left are wood-fired. The one on the right is raku'd.)
